LAYER UPON LAYER WS Layer upon Layer Rising up across the landscape Just beneath our feet Lies the history of this land These different types of rock Are laid down throughout millennia Each layer once would form The very ground on which we stand Things that dwelt on earth That lived and died throughout the ages Resting where they fell Here beneath the blazing sun Time then marches on And all here is covered over And layer upon layer Fossil succession has begun BOTH If you are looking for the patterns Then you can find and read the signs They're up there on the highest mountains Down in the deepest darkest mines The answer's hidden in these layers The answer lies between these lines These layers of rock unlock the secrets of our time! JP This layer's full of ferns From an ancient forest floor! And here lie ammonites like saucers From a long-lost ocean shore! WS It seems so clear, so well defined Why did we not see this before? From these fossilised remains So many theories to explore! CHORUS Day by day WS Can you see what this means, what this idea implies! CHORUS Year by year JP And the answer is right here in front of our eyes! CHORUS Layer by layer WS We can map out the world, we're like travellers through time! CHORUS All through time WS Layer upon Layer Rising up across the landscape Just beneath our feet Lies the history of this land And all these different types of rock Are laid down throughout millennia Each and every layer forms The ground on which we stand CHORUS Day by day WS Can you see what this means, what this idea implies! CHORUS Year by year WS & WS And the answer is here right in front of our eyes! CHORUS Layer by layer WS We can map out the world we can travel through time! CHORUS All through time

about

Beach Hut Theatre Company have been producing innovative and exciting plays, musicals and multimedia events since 2007. They are an artistically led, community driven theatre company, committed to creating memorable and spectacular productions at venues and site - specific locations across the town and throughout the region.
Led by Artistic Director, playwright and dramaturg Alison Watt, the company has grown over the years to be a shining beacon of artistic endeavour. They have a permanent base in the centre of Scarborough in a converted former Pool and Snooker room in the town’s Library and Information centre.

This second volume of ‘Hut Music’ by John Pattison (Associate Director, Musical Director and resident composer) represents the most recent seven years of the company. The album begins with a track from the Rock Opera ‘Rock, Rascals and Revolution’ created by John Pattison and Alison Watt to celebrate the bicentenary of the publishing of the Geological Map of Britain by William Smith. The final track is the final cue from the play ‘The Lonely Path’ written and directed by Paul Beck. This album also contains some music from Summer’s Edge by Watt and Pattison. The company were in rehearsal for a large-scale revival of this musical in spring 2020. They were due to open two weeks after the first Covid-19 lockdown was announced. It will be one of the first productions to be presented by the company when performers and audiences can return to doing what they love best.

I hope you enjoy this album and that for those of you who have seen our work, it brings back some happy memories. For those of you still to discover the wonderful world of Beach Hut Theatre Company, you can find out more about us at www.beachhuttheatre.co.uk
