My Island 04:46
MY ISLAND Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 The time has come To let it out or let it lie, it’s time. For each twisted truth Each shattered hope Each broken dream, it’s time. My island is drowning, My Island is going down. The vast divide Between us now. Is wider every day. The crumbling walls Around our lives Foundations built on clay. My island is sinking, My island is going down. INSTRUMENTAL The time has come To face the dark, to speak its name, it’s time. To tear it down And start again To dare to dream, its time My island is drowning My island is going down INSTRUMENTAL

Sometimes 04:19
SOMETIMES Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 I sometimes wonder where you are today I wonder why you ever walked away I sometimes simply want to hear you say ‘I love you.’ I sometimes hear the songbird call deep in the night I look outside and see him flying out of sight I never know what made him turn and take flight, like you. And I know things could never be the way they were before, But like a fool I keep wishing you could come back once more. I sometimes feel the ricochet of times long gone, Relive the moments when it all went wrong, I sometimes wonder how I’ll ever carry on, without you. And I know things could never be the way they were before, But like a fool you can be sure I’ll keep coming back for more. INSTRUMENTAL I sometimes wonder where you are today I wonder why you ever walked away I sometimes simply want to hear you say ‘I love you.’

WHEN I SAID I NEEDED LOVE Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 When I said I needed love, I meant I needed love forever And when I said I needed us I meant I needed us together Don’t want a temporary partnership, Don’t want a bona fide open relationship, Don’t want a one-night stand movie ticket in my hand as a memory, I want something that shows and a feeling that grows between you me, You and me. And when I said I needed time, I needed time to think more clearly now, And when I said I needed hope I needed hope that you would stay here now Don’t want a temporary partnership, Don’t want a bona fide open relationship, Don’t want a one-night stand movie ticket in my hand as a memory, I want something that shows and a feeling that grows between you me, You and me. When I said I needed love When I said I needed love When I said I needed love When I said I needed love I needed your love. And when I said I needed you, I meant I needed you forever. When I said I would be true, I meant I would be true, true to you. Don’t want a temporary partnership, Don’t want a bona fide open relationship, Don’t want a one-night stand movie ticket in my hand as a memory, It’s no good to me I want something that shows and a feeling that grows between you me, You and me. When I said I needed love When I said I needed love When I said I needed love When I said I needed love

Summer 04:55
SUMMER Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 Summer, summer Why d’you lose your green and turn to fall, You gave me so much, Then suddenly you turned around and took it all. And now the snow is here, I must nurse this broken heart, But in the knowledge that the spring will always bring again, A brand new start. I should have seen in August, When instead of sun it rained and rained It soaked me right through, Look at me now and see what your freedom has gained And now the snow is here, I must nurse this broken heart, But in the knowledge that the spring will always bring again, A brand new start. INSTRUMENTAL I know I cannot change the seasons But I wish that summer could come twice a year, To hold you once more, would take my fears away, But now the snow is here, I must nurse this broken heart, But with the knowledge that the spring will always bring again, A brand new start. Safe in the knowledge that the spring will always bring again, A brand new start.

GIVE A LITTLE MORE Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 It’s over No more to say Can’t believe you’re leaving. Did you ever love me anyway. Before you go. A question. Is this the way it ends? No rhyme, no reason Like we were never even friends. Thought our love was so complete Thought our love could never lie But you just turned your heart to stone and let the feeling die You’ll never really know because you’re not prepared to try To give a little more. Why won’t you give. Give a little more. Why can’t you give, Give a little more Of your love. When I saw you in the street, And you turned and walked on by, I had to stop the bitter tears from falling from my eye. I thought you’d be the last one who would hurt me with goodbye, Give a little more. Why won’t you give, (give, give) give a little more. Why can’t you give, (give, give) give a little more Of your love. You love me and leave me, You break my heart in two, How can I make you believe me, It should have been me (It should have been me) And you. INSTRUMENTAL Why won’t you give, give a little more, Why can’t you give a little more, Why won’t you * give, give a little more, Why can’t you give a little more Why can’t you give a little more Of your love to me.

WEEKEND ROMEO Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 Just another Saturday night, Jamie Lee is getting prepared. She checks her dress and she is looking all right, A little lower than she’d normally have dared. Across the town our boy is splashing it on, With a flick of the comb he looks just fine. And as his body hits the cold night air, He reckons he’ll get lucky this time. He’s just looking for the… Easy thrill Of a weekend Juliet And she is hoping for the… Loving touch Of someone who cares. Every weekend it’s the… Same again And though the faces change the rules… Remain the same All the pleasure with no guilt … no blame, no pain For the weekend Romeo. Inside the club he sees her step from the street, He feels like there is something to prove. Takes out a tenner as he heads for the bar, Our Romeo is making his move. Six vodkas later she caresses his face, He whispers something sweet in her ear. She tells him maybe they could go to her place, He tells her all the things she’s wanting to hear. Day after day the feeling’s there, Sometimes it feels you’re heading nowhere. Then Friday falls. it falls like a ray of light. To stop your world from turning sour You lose yourself in happy hour, To step inside your dreams on Saturday night. INSTRUMENTAL Sunday morning, Jamie opens her eyes, Checks the time and raises her head. She’s seen it coming but it’s still a surprise, He’s standing at the end of the bed. He’s dressed so quickly, like he can’t wait to leave, He tells her that he’s sorry to go. He says he’ll call her and she wants to believe, But in her heart she already knows, But in her heart she already knows He’s just looking for the… Easy thrill Of a weekend Juliet And she is hoping for the… Loving touch Of someone who cares. Every weekend it’s the… Same again And though the faces change the rules… Remain the same All the pleasure with no guilt … no blame, no pain For the weekend Romeo. Weekend Romeo, Weekend Romeo, Just for the weekend, Romeo.

SINCE TIME BEGAN Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 Since time began, it’s always been That boy or girl, King or Queen, When lady luck is out with friends, Then win or lose, it all depends, On how far you can throw a feather, On how well you can change the weather. I sometimes wonder what I’m doing here, I sometimes wonder what we’re doing here. Live for today Don’t hide away Those precious dreams you keep inside, It doesn’t matter, what people say, For after all, they’re only people anyway. When some are born, so fit and strong, And some must fight just to get along When some have wealth and some have none, You can see just how this myth began For how far can you throw a feather How many times have you changed the weather? I sometimes wonder what I’m doing here, I sometimes wonder what we’re doing here. Live for today Don’t hide away Those precious dreams you keep inside, It doesn’t matter, what people say, For after all, they’re only people anyway. I say Live for today Don’t hide away Those precious dreams you keep inside, It doesn’t matter, what people say, For after all, they’re only people anyway

Friday Night 04:40
FRIDAY NIGHT Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 A Friday night not much to do, And in the bar they’re playing the blues What am I to do? Another drink should be enough To pass the time before I go. What am I to do? Across the room I see you walk I wonder if you’ve time to talk What am I to do? I ask the time, act so un-cool, You look so fine, I look a fool. What am I to do? And all I want is just to dance, To spend some time and find a little romance And all I need is to see you smile, Please talk to me just for a little while. And as you dance I move in close But all the time you look away, What am I to do? The music stops, you turn to go, I call you back but you just don’t want to know. What am I to do? And all I want is just to dance, To spend some time and find a little romance And all I need is to see you smile, Please talk to me just for a little while. INSTRUMENTAL What am I (what am I) What am I supposed to do? What am I (what am I) What am I supposed to do? And as you leave I ask your name The music’s loud so I don’t her what you’re saying What am I to do? I find my coat and head for home, That’s one more night I’ll spend all alone. What am I to do? And all I want is just to dance, To spend some time and find a little romance And all I need is to see you smile, Please talk to me just for a little while

OUT OF THE BLUE Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 You’ve gone and done it now, You’ve gone and put your foot right in. Take me out of the blue, And far from you. Out Of the blue. Still you cannot hurt me now, You cannot tell me what to do, Take me out of the blue, And far from you. Out Of the blue. And I will find that peace of mind I sought so long And a love that makes me strong again. There were times you’d love to share, And there times that you were there, And there were times I held your hand in mine Sometimes Still the pain is here inside, And its burning me so deep within, Take me out of the blue, And far from you. Out Of the blue. Take me out of the blue.

The Hunger 02:22
THE HUNGER Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 Enough has passed between us In the time that time has seen us, Still we hide emotion in our eyes. The hurt that kept me silent, How I long to break this silence, Not sit alone with heavy heart and sighs. Maybe I should have stayed some more I should have been long gone before, Maybe I should have played the wise man, Instead I played the fool. With your head upon my shoulder You warmed my heart till I felt bolder Sent my fears running back into the night. So can’t we walk for longer, Your love once made me stronger Can’t we keep our troubles out of sight Maybe I should have stayed some more I should have been long gone before, Maybe I should have played the wise man, Instead I played the fool. But now I long to love you Oh how I long to hold you How I feel the hunger here inside Why do we run from love just to be free? Why do we hide from love just to be free? Why do we run from love, when it’s where we long to be?

U R The 1 03:28
U R THE ONE Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 You came to me When I was forsaken You lifted me up You helped me pull through You opened my eyes You helped me awaken, unless I’m mistaken I find myself falling for you. I’ve spent all of my time In a sea of confusion Adrift in my life Like a lost castaway But you and your love, Are not an illusion, my only conclusion Is love you, love you today. With you by my side, I can cross any ocean With you holding my hand I can reach for the sky With you in my life, so good the emotion, You’re my heart’s devotion And baby I’m telling you why You are the one, who, Will love me so sweetly You are the one, who I miss when you’re gone You are the one, who Knows just how to treat me I love you completely Cos you, you are the one. With you by my side, I can face any danger With you holding my hand, My world is brand new. With you in my life, you’re my perfect stranger My heart’s re-arranger And baby it’s beating for you You are the one, who, Will love me so sweetly You are the one, who I miss when you’re gone You are the one, who Knows just how to treat me I love you completely Cos you, you are the one. Repeat Chorus

Broken 03:06
BROKEN Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 Her I want you I really want you to stay But I need you put of my heart today Him You know that’s not true It feels so right with you Her I’d like you I’d like you out of my head I loved you But maybe less than I said Him Give me one chance to try I don’t see why? Her We’re broken. Did I think I wouldn’t mind? Did you think my love was blind? Did you think I wouldn’t care? Did you think our love was going somewhere? Did you think I couldn’t see? BABY’S LEAVING Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 This is the moment I’ve been waiting for I had my doubts but now I know for sure Always thought that I’d feel something more Skipped a heartbeat and that was all But I know that later your sky will fall And when it does I won’t be taking your call Cos’ baby’s leaving Did you lift me up when I was feeling so bad Did you keep me sane when the world had gone mad, Were you once the best friend that I’d ever had? This baby’s leaving. Baby’s leaving. Going to strike out going to get it right Throw back the curtains and let in the light Banish the shadows and step out of the night Cos’ baby’s leaving I feel a fire burning bright in my soul, I need some danger need some out of control, I’m looking for something that can make me feel whole So baby’s leaving. Your world turns upside down When there’s no more love to be found You can promise me a better way but I won’t be around, This baby’s leaving town. INSTRUMENTAL Baby’s Leaving town.

Love of Gold 04:44
LOVE OF GOLD Words and music by John Pattison and Alison Watt © 2011 Across the sky a thread of golden light Heralds the dawn of a new direction Watching shadows as they flee the night An end to searching we must build protection For this love of gold, love of gold Walking headlong into blaze of day Looks like we really made it Something strong worth holding onto There could have been such hell to pay No looking backwards now that we belong to This love of gold, love of gold INSTRUMENTAL And now the day turns fiery red Forgotten is all pain and sorrow I hear your words inside my head Hold onto what we’ve found And we could still be here tomorrow This love of gold, love of gold Dancing angels in your eyes So much more than love this strong desire You brought this bitter=sweet surprise Love of gold turns ashes into fire Love of gold Love of gold Love of gold Love of gold

You and I 06:15
YOU AND I Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 You and I Have come a long, long way together We’ve laughed, we’ve cried And we’ve braved all kinds of stormy weather. But how can I say, what I feel here today. For you and I know our love will never die. And sometimes when I look deep into your eyes I see to my surprise the honesty shines clear. And sometimes when you smile you’re smiling at me. I want to let you see how much you mean to me. You and I Have shared each heavy load Our steadfast love Has nurtured every seed we’ve sowed But how can I say, what I feel here today. For you and I know our love will never die. And sometimes when I look deep into your eyes I see to my surprise the honesty shines clear. And sometimes when you smile you’re smiling at me. I want to let you see just what, what you mean to me. INSTRUMENTAL You and I Have not walked through life alone One brick at a time we’ve built our love, our home But how can I say, what I feel here today. For you and I our love will never die.

DREAMS ARE UNTOUCHABLE Words and music by John Pattison © 2011 Long years in the city Have prepared her for this test Even so she’s apprehensive All alone against the rest. In the morning air she’s standing, In her place along the line. And she hopes she will be lucky Maybe get somewhere this time. Long ago she had the fortune, Worked so hard from nine ‘til five Now her world is cold and empty, Doesn’t know that she’s alive. And in the morning air she’s waiting, Waiting there so quietly until, Factory gates no longer open All the vacancies now filled, All the vacancies now filled. When you fall get back up, Or the fear will drag you down. If your way is not clear, Then just turn yourself around. If you feel you’re alone, And there’s no more love to be found, You must always, always remember. Dreams are untouchable. Dreams are untouchable. Once she had a steady boyfriend, They’d lived together hand in glove, Then one day he’d walked out shouting, ‘Where there’s no money there’s no love.’ That night she sat alone just waiting Listened for his footsteps on the stair. She sat there quietly ‘til morning, Wondering why her life was so unfair. As she looked out through the window Down to the city streets below, Cutting through her desperation, Came a warmth and inner glow. She closed her eyes and she remembered, All the things she used to love to do, When she was young and so creative, Maybe it was time for something new. Maybe it was time for something new. When you fall get back up, Or the fear will drag you down. If your way is not clear, Then just turn yourself around. If you feel you’re alone, And there’s no more love to be found, You must always, always remember. Dreams are untouchable. Dreams are untouchable. INSTRUMENTAL Now she’s making steady progress, Life’ is getting better day by day. She’s found a way to use her passion, She’s found a way to make it pay! She’s doesn’t need to follow fashion. She’s making new ones of her own. She’s in control and she is happy, She’s realised that she is not alone. She’s met new friends who share her vision, Love and laughter thought forever gone. And they’re facing life together Love’s long struggle nearly won. Love’s long struggle nearly won. When you fall get back up, Or the fear will drag you down. If your way is not clear, Then just turn yourself around. If you feel you’re alone, And there’s no more love to be found, You must always, always remember. Dreams are untouchable. Dreams are untouchable. Your dreams are yours and yours alone.

about

LIFE SONGS
Original songs about
Love, Loss and Light at the end of the tunnel.

These songs are from a series of performances in the summer of 2011.
This text bellow is from an article in SEN from July of that year.

John Pattison is a prolific songwriter who has composed scores for major films and theatre productions. With several West End runs, national and international tours featuring his wide-ranging talents, this is the first time many of these remarkable songs have been performed in his hometown of Scarborough. He has written successful stage musicals with Alan Ayckbourn and John Godber and has composed two film scores for film director Alain Resnais, a seminal figure in the French New Wave, featuring the orchestra from the Paris Opera.

For these performances Ava Noble, Sophie Norris, Jerry Penrose and Jim White will provide vocals. Paul Nash who is guitarist with ‘The Danse Society’ plays guitar. Liam Watt Pattison is on bass and Iain Hunter of Scarborough band Everyone An Army will be playing drums and percussion. Alongside these talented singers and musicians John is also using the ‘JPO,’ a carefully crafted virtual orchestra. He says:

‘After working with such amazing orchestral musicians over the years I wanted to try and recreate the excitement and dynamic range of an orchestra on stage. I used the JPO to compose a ballet, which was performed at the Grand Opera House in York with the Red Shoes Dance Studio and for two new film scores including GM, which premiered at The National Film Theatre. In a live situation, it involves nine different controller keyboards and a bit of mental multitasking but I am delighted by the way it works with the ‘real’ instruments and particularly with the singers. As a student I was inspired by a performance of Vaughan Williams’ Serenade To Music, which uses sixteen soloists and the orchestra to create texture and harmony through individual musical lines. I wanted to use similar techniques in the context of contemporary songs to tell moving stories about different aspects of human relationships.’

Live sound operator for these performances and the engineer on the original recordings was Ben Vickers. I am hugely indebted to him for making this album possible.
Jim Wells designed and operated the lighting.

These songs have been digitally remastered at the composer's Phoenix Studios from the original 17 track double live album.

All proceeds from this album will be donated to Beach Hut Theatre Company CIO, who staged the original performances. Any funds raised will be utilised to help them with running costs during the current Covid-19 pandemic.
