about

Time of My Life by Alan Ayckbourn – Incidental Music by John Pattison

This play received its World Premiere at The Stephen Joseph Theatre in The Round in Scarborough in 1992. It subsequently transferred to the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End in 1993, where it received excellent reviews.

The play is set across three different timelines. The main strand runs in real time following the events of a family birthday party in a restaurant. Another strand runs forwards in time following the aftermath of the party and the final strand goes backwards following the weeks leading up to the party.

The play is set in fictitious restaurant ‘Calvinus’ with owner Calvinu and the waiters, Tuto, Aggi, Dinka and Bengie all played by the same actor. Ayckbourn deliberately didn’t state what country Calvinu and the waiters came from and invented his own language for them to speak. This is where many of the track titles came from.

The music sweeps around the Mediterranean Sea in terms of its influences, but is definitely inspired in part by an LP I had in the 1970s called ‘Memories of Greece’.

The instruments used are all played in real time using samplers and no quantisation. Instruments included are Dumek, Kanoun, Kawala, Oud, Saz and Bendir alongside Bazouki, Accordion, Piano, Flamenco Guitar and Santouri.

These tracks have been remastered from the original ‘Songs from My Country’ album that was available in the SJT shop at Westwood up until 1996.

The original Scarborough cast was Russell Dixon, Colette O’Neil, Richard Garnett, Stephen Mapes, Karen Drury, Sophie Heyman and Terence Booth.

The London cast was Anton Rodgers, Gwen Taylor, Richard Garnett, Stephen Mapes, Karen Drury, Sophie Heyman and Terence Booth.
