about

This second album of Ayckbourn Music features selections from some more of the original scores written, performed and produced by the composer, John Pattison for productions of Alan Ayckbourn plays during twenty years working as Musical Director and Composer at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, UK. This album also features a selection of extracts from some of the scores that I wrote for Ayckbourn’s many ‘family shows’.

Alan Ayckbourn believes that children are just as discerning as adults and if anything can be a little more astute in certain areas. The family shows explored many of the themes that Ayckbourn explored in his ‘adult’ plays, lone parents and self-discovery. A popular feature that bridged both genres was robots and automatons. These family plays were also often more heavily underscored than the others. They were often very filmic and fast paced to appeal to all ages.
The music has many different styles and influences. The suite of music composed for The Champion of Paribanou played throughout the whole building during the run of the play. The original suite is twenty-five minutes long. As with many of the family plays. There was a combination of recorded and live music to augment the action and to highlight the dialogue.

These tracks were created whilst working as part of some extremely talented and imaginative creative teams. Working alongside some of the most gifted designers and lighting designers in the industry was a privilege and also hugely inspiring.

Special mention goes to the following for making the journey so enjoyable and fulfilling: Mick Hughes (Lighting Design), Roger Glossop (Design), Micheal Holt (Design), Jackie Staines (Lighting and Sound Design), Kath Geraghty (Lighting and Sound Design), Juliet Nichol (Design), Pip Leckenby (Design), Micheael Roberts (Design), Jan Bee Brown (Design) Paul Stear (Lighting and Sound Design), Ben Vickers (Lighting and Sound Design), Paul Towson (Lighting Design) Frank Matthews (Master Carpenter) and all the other stage management teams and technical crews who worked tirelessly and inventively over the years to bring all these productions to life.

Finally, a huge thank you to Alan Ayckbourn for writing and producing the plays, and for choosing me and my music to complement so many fantastic productions.
