about

i. Taking Steps

This music was multi-tracked in several single takes using an old Roland W30 sampler (as favoured by The Prodigy). The music is deliberately chaotic and slightly unpredictable to complement the staging of the play, where actors are performing the stage equivalent of three-dimensional chess on three different floors of the same house on one stage level. This score was revised for the New York Premiere of the play directed by Alan Strachan in 1991.

World Premiere: 28 September 1979
Venue: Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round, Scarborough
London Premiere: 2 September 1980
Venue: Lyric Theatre
New York Premiere: 2 February 1991
Venue: Circle In The Square Theatre

This score is from the revival directed by Alan Ayckbourn at The Stephen Joseph Theatre in 1990.

ii. Othello (Willow Song)
By William Shakespeare, adapted and directed by Alan Ayckbourn

This may seem a strange partner for the Taking Steps music, but they are linked by a famous wizard and a dwarf. These two plays were presented in repertoire at the SJT in 1990 and they featured Michael Gambon (Dumbledore) and Ken Stott (Balin). This song was sung by the Desdemona, who was played in this production by Claire Skinner (Outnumbered). This play also saw a live performance by me, on Radio 4’s Kaleidoscope programme, of a Harpsicord Courante that I wrote for one of the Venice scenes.

Premiere: 26th September 1990
Venue: SJT
