about

Dreams are Untouchable.

A song inspired by the appalling unemployment rate at the time. In 1982 we hit the highest level of unemployment in the UK since the 1930s. This was the time when the then Employment Secretary, Norman Tebbit told everyone to ‘Get on their Bike’ to find work.

It wasn’t that easy Norman. Even the big chocolate factories in York at that time, traditional places where work could be found in the past, were cutting back. I realised that music was the only way forward for me. Ironically I followed Norman's advice, I joined a government scheme, The Enterprise Allowance scheme to start my business JP Music Enterprises. This involved taking out a huge loan to buy equipment from a Bank manager who remarkably was sympathetic to the Arts. I was determined to make it work and the tiny business specialised in live performances but also provided a very basic mobile recording studio. I recorded only a few bands at this time, but one that sticks in my memory is the strange guitar duo ‘Duchamp’s Toupeè’.

‘Dreams’ was the longest song in my set and my poor Roland TR505 drum machine didn’t have enough memory for all the patterns so I had to use the old ping pong bounce technique on the tape deck. The synth solos were done on the Moog Prodigy. I am very fond of this synthesiser. I first heard one on Howard Jones’ 1983 track ‘ New Song.
