Remember Scarborough

from Hut Music - Volume One by John Pattison

/

about

At 8.30am on the morning of 16th December 1914 the first world war came to Scarborough. Two battle ships of the German fleet opened fire on the Town causing 18 deaths and much destruction. 'Remember Scarborough' became a rallying cry for recruitment, with a famous poster featuring images of the burning town presided over by a giant figure of Britannia posted all over the country.

This production told the story of the events of that day and commemorates the innocents who lost their lives and the impact that this tragedy had on the local community.

This production was presented in the open air overlooking the harbour and lighthouse (which was destroyed in the attack). This outdoor event was part of a weekend of events presented in St Nicholas Gardens by Beach Hut. Other events included original plays by local writers, a Peirrot show by John Pattison and a live Art Installation in the Sunken Garden.

The cast for this production was Maisie Atkinson, Harry Bullen, Will Duffield and Georgina Samuels. Liam Watt Pattison created and operated the specially created film sections that interweaved with the storytelling. The images were shown on again screen as part of the production.

The play was subsequently remounted at Woodend Creative Space. This was a poignant and appropriate setting for the piece, as during the time of the bombardment Woodend was the Summer residence of the famous Sitwell family. Woodend was also hit by a shell from the battleships.

This production was presented in 2014 as we approached the centenary of the event.
