Too Scared to Dance

Written around the same time as Sugared Poison, this track arose from observing people sitting alone in the booths around the edges of the dance floor at Ziggy’s Nightclub. It’s a shame that night clubs, in their 1980’s form, don’t exist anymore. They were great places for people to meet and dance for fun. People weren’t always very good and yes, sometimes they did dance in groups around their handbags, but it was a truly social experience. The music was loud, but never so loud you couldn’t shout in the ear of your partner to order another Pernod and Black or a Barley Wine, not 1980’s Motorhead loud anyway.

I felt a great affinity with the loners in the booths. I have never been a great dancer. I enjoy the idea of it and I really appreciate the skills of other people, but quite frankly it scares me a little bit. Too scared to dance is about trying to just go ahead and grab life by the proverbials and also about the search for love.
